Tara Bradner, DNP, FNP-C, of Ashley, ND, just completed a 4 week salaried position at the AANP Government Affairs office located in Alexandria, VA. This position is granted to one nurse practitioner per quarter.
During Bradner’s fellowship experience, she worked to promote the health of the nation and the advancement of nurse practitioners ability to work within their full scope of practice.
“My main task was providing additional support to the staff for health policy leadership development activities in addition to attending Congressional briefings, political fundraisers, and policy seminars,” says Bradner. One of the highlights of this experience was being able to have lunch with Senator John Hoeven, breakfast with Representative Kevin Cramer, and a one-on-one meeting with Senator Heidi Heitkamp.”
Bradner says during her meetings with North Dakota’s Congressional Delegation, they discussed the various issues affecting rural health care in the state as well as those issues affecting nurse practitioners. Bradner says she was also fortunate to also meet with Mary Wakefield, Acting Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
