‘She always took the time’: Patients’ families, colleagues surprise 40-year NICU nurse with a party

Vicki Holtan has dedicated 40 years of her life to caring for the littlest of patients as a neonatal intensive care unit nurse. She’s spent countless hours comforting the families of babies born prematurely.

Heather King still remembers how at ease Holtan made her feel when her son was in the NICU nine years ago.

“She always took the time to calm us, to reassure everything would be OK when we left the hospital,” King said. “She took care of my son like she would take care of her own.”

On Friday afternoon, July 13, Holtan thought she was coming home from the lake to attend a RedHawks baseball game. Instead, she walked into a surprise party at Essentia Health where relatives, colleagues and former NICU patients and their families celebrated her 40 years as a nurse.
