Veterans reflect on World War II service that defined a generation

GRAND FORKS — Anna Walker was 22 years old when she boarded a ship on Sept. 12, 1943, to England, where she was assigned to serve with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II.

“I felt a little bit insecure,” the 97-year-old woman said, “but I thought, well, we have a good chaplain, Father Kenneth Martin.”

It took six days to cross the Atlantic.

“Our whole unit went together. We had aircraft coverage during the first three days of the trip,” Walker said, as though she could see the planes flying overhead in her mind’s eye.
