U.S. labor secretary visits North Dakota to discuss workforce issues

.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta learned that North Dakota is challenged by the ratio of businesses to people in the state.

“You’ve got one small business for about every 10 people, including children, and that’s a real challenge, because you create jobs in such a decentralized way,” Acosta said Thursday at a roundtable discussion with the heads of North Dakota’s tribal colleges.

Acosta, at the invite of Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., made stops across North Dakota on Thursday to discuss workforce issues. Acosta said one of his main takeaways from the day-long trip is to keep in mind the important role of small businesses, and to not create programs or regulations that hinder them.

“It’s important that those of us in Washington to understand the scale issues here in North Dakota,” he said.
