When people hear palliative medicine, it’s often associated with death and end of life care. But as CHI Physician, Doctor Laura Archuleta explains, it’s much more than that.

It’s comprehensive, creative pain care, including symptom management, psychotherapy and any extra care that patients with severe chronic illnesses need.

It’s a rather new field of medicine, especially in North Dakota.

CHI’s team of six caretakers includes doctors, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

They do in-home visits on top of clinic visits.

Dr. Archuleta shares, “In an ideal world, I tell my patients, I wouldn’t have a job. If healthcare was as simple as we’d like it to be, your primary physician would be able to have these in-depth discussions with you and take the time to manage the symptoms. Unfortunately, that’s not the way the healthcare system works anymore.”
